UGA Rugby is more than a team or a club or a program – it’s a FAMILY. We have fun together. We respect each other. We love one another and aren’t afraid to show it.
COACHING BEYOND JUST SPORT
As an extracurricular activity, we certainly recognize the need to have fun. As a competitive sport, the coaches certainly push our players to reach their potential, with the goal of winning. However, both of these are secondary to our long-term objective – which is to help develop great young men. Rugby is the vehicle by which we strive to help our players develop as individuals, to reinforce principles and hone skills that will help them throughout their lives. Work ethic. Accountability. Teamwork. Leadership. Communication. Time-management and prioritization.
We also try to keep our eyes and ears open for our student-athlete’s overall needs, such as academic guidance, interview coaching, career advice, internships/job opportunities, mentorship, or any other personal support. Letters of recommendation for graduate school and medical school. Referrals and inside leads to industry jobs. Financial literacy guidance for the transition from students to working professionals.
When we identify an opportunity to help, we cherish the opportunity to provide it, whether by our coaches or our alumni network.
BEYOND COLLEGE
All of this is why we have a long tradition of players who stay engaged after they graduate. Our alumni and current players get together several times a year to play rugby, to watch rugby, to support the club, to watch Kirby Smart’s Bulldawgs play, and to socialize. We remain active in each other’s lives for years – often decades – beyond college. The club’s impact on our members extends FAR beyond their time at UGA, and beyond rugby. We are groomsmen and officiants in each others’ weddings, uncles and godfathers to each others’ children, and pallbearers in each others’ funerals.
