Competition
Representing the University of Georgia, the UGA Rugby Football Club competes in the D1-AA division of the Southeastern Collegiate Rugby Conference. Our players get the opportunity compete against the highest level of competition in this unique and demanding sport, in both 15s (aka rugby union) in the Fall, as well as the much faster-paced 7s variation in the Spring.
We have players of all athletic backgrounds and skill levels, ranging from this being the first sport they’ve ever played, to coming to UGA with multiple years of rugby experience. With an A-side and a B-side, we aim to compete AND to make sure all of our members get playing time. Anybody with a strong work ethic and a desire to help the club compete is welcome!
Club Culture
UGA Rugby strives to balance the competitive aspects of rugby with a fun, team-oriented culture and environment. We have members from wide variety of backgrounds, beliefs, and athletic backgrounds – we welcome ALL who are interested in joining.
Our members are not just part of a rugby club, they’re part of the greater UGA Rugby family, which includes our alumni from the past 6 decades – once a UGA Rugger, always a UGA Rugger. In addition to our competitive matches, UGA Rugby members enjoy the opportunity to participate in various club traditions with our alumni, such as:
Hosted by the Savannah Shamrocks every Spring, this is THE largest St. Patrick’s Day Rugby tournament in the world, and a fun-filled weekend of rugby and camaraderie that can’t be matched. UGA Rugby has participated every single year since it started in 1978, and won championships in multiple divisions many times over the years – competitive, old boys, and social.
Hosted by the Asheville Rugby club each summer, this recent tradition has become one of our club’s favorite weekends of the year. We’re extremely proud to say, we’re undefeated at this tournament for 2 straight years, and our “Hot Dawgs” are the reigning tournament champions!
Last, but certainly not least – UGA Rugby strives to develop great young men and to have a long-lasting positive impact on our members’ lives. Check out our testimonials page for examples of how we’ve done just that!
