Coming off of a close loss to South Carolina last weekend, the Bulldogs’ faced the Clemson Tigers (ranked 27 in the Goff Rugby Report and 5th in the NCR D1AA Coaches Poll) for their 2nd conference match of the season. The game started off a little shakily, with Clemson taking advantage of some defensive spacing issues to gain ground, and scoring a try within the first 10 minutes. But our backline never gave up, continuing to chase them down, making great tackles, and giving us time to regroup and settle down. Defensively, we brought a lot of pressure, caused multiple passing/handling errors from Clemson’s backline, and made a lot of big hits. Offensively, we also found our rhythm and confidence, executing our game plan well, and doing a nice job of moving the ball in well-constructed phases. There were multiple times when we were within a few feet from scoring tries, but untimely mistakes and handling errors cost us. The first half ended with Clemson up 10-0 (from 2 unconverted tries), but the team felt good. We felt fairly evenly matched, and knew that if we could simply clean up some mistakes, we had every opportunity to even up the score and hang with Clemson. Most of the second half went very much like the first - good strong play from both teams, with the momentum going back and forth. Again, Clemson scored a try (unconverted) within the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half, but we continued to play to their level for the most part, and felt like the game was still within our grasp. Our boys never backed down, continuing to bring the fight to Clemson. With only around 12 minutes left in the match, the score was 15-0…and that’s when a questionable penalty ultimately led to our undoing. Chasing a beautiful up and under, outside center Scrappy Spotts chased hard and contested for the ball, accidentally colliding with the opposing 13. Unfortunately, the referee saw it differently and brougt out the yellow card. Clemson immediately pounced, and skillfully took advantage of the numerical advantage in the backline to score 3 quick tries (all unconverted). That onslaught was simply too much, and we gave up one more try under the posts at the very end of the match - final score at the whistle, 37-0 Clemson. Although the scoreboard doesn’t reflect this, our Bulldogs played a GREAT match, hanging with Clemson for a large majority of the match. We executed our gameplan much more effectively, we cleaned up our penalties, and we identified the things that we need to tweak to continue improving. This young team is definitely on an upward trajectory!

Similar to last season, this matchup with the South Carolina Gamecocks came down to the wire, and it proved to be another hard-fought battle between two teams that seemed fairly evenly matched. Georgia drew first blood with try off of an intercepted pass by Henry Kim. South Carolina struck twice after that, scoring two tries while taking advantage of many penalties from the Georgia team, including a yellow card which left the Bulldogs down a man for 10 minutes in the half. South Carolina scored 2 more tries in the first half, benefiting from some high tackle penalties, one of which put Georgia down a man for 10 minutes. Fortunately, our boys kept their heads high and their foot on the gas, and a nice pick & go try by flanker Drew Surio tied up the game 12-12 before the half (converted by Connor Westbrook). In the second half, South Carolina’s back line quickly put them ahead 19-12 with an intercepted backline pass…but Georgia would not be deterred, continuing to bring the fight, executing our offensive plan and working our way back down the field on multiple occasions. Flanker Jack Madden scored our next try with a hard crash ball, and the next try came from Brian Acklen, who pulled the classic shifty scrumhalf move, taking a quick tap off a penalty within their 22 meter line and beautifully weaving through their defense for a try. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to convert those two tries, and with 10 minutes left in the game, we were up by only 3 points (19-22). Ultimately, penalties would be our undoing…another high tackle resulted in another yellow card, and a few other unfortunate penalties too close to the goalposts gave South Carolina 2 penalty kicks, both of which they made. Final score, South Carolina 25, Georgia 22. The Georgia team looks to regroup and prepare for another tough battle against Clemson next weekend.
