SCRC Olympic Sevens

April 12, 2018

It was more like the winter Olympics in Knoxville last weekend when the Dawgs traveled above the snow line to compete for the opportunity to play in the Penn Mutual Collegiate National Championship Tournament.

The Southeastern Collegiate Rugby Conference (SCRC) is the governing body of what we hope will one day become SEC Rugby. Teams from all over the SEC came to Knoxville to throw down for a chance to play on national television later this summer.

With a wintery mix of frozen mist, rain and snow in the air, the Dawgs took to the pitch at 9:00 am to show the Florida Gators why crocs don't thrive in the cold. Here are the results of that match and the subsequent matches throughout the day.

As you can see, we avoided the ol' wooden spoon by beating MSU and finishing 1-4 on the day. Congratulations to South Carolina for moving on. They played some great rugby in very difficult conditions.

New UGARFCAA Board Chairman, Ryan Brenny, was in attendance for the entire tournament and when reached for comment he said "The heater works in my car". He went on to say "The boys played hard and the conditions were tough, but we can beat those teams. I did not see a whole lot of difference between our team and their teams. We've got to close the gap. We've got to emerge as the best team in the SCRC, be the best in the SEC again and earn a chance to compete on TV in the Penn Mutual National Championship. That's our goal."

The boys are back in Athens this week preparing for a visit from Appalachian State this Saturday. Anyone looking to play in Red and Black again...there will be a chance with our B side. Please contact Ryan by clicking this link.

Good Luck!
