Jason Jones receives Johnny Mac

UGA Rugby Club alumni and long time club supporter, Jason Jones, received the Johnny Mac Award in Savannah, Georgia during the weekend long St. Patrick's Day celebration. By all accounts, Jason was surprised and humbled to learn he had been selected for the recognition.

Named for the legendary man, incredible friend, dependable teammate and talented bar tender, John Macomber, the award is the club's highest honor. The Johnny Mac Award recognizes the club members who most embody the spirit of our fallen brother. The 2018 winner is the type of man that Johnny would have been proud to call a "friend".

Friends and former teammates will tell you that Jason played rugby with guts and passion. He has been a dependable source of support for the club both on and off the pitch. He is a great man, a strong leader and a family man to the core. Congratulations Jason. Great job!

Jason expressed his deep gratitude in a post on the alumni's FB page:

"To be chosen to stand alongside the great men that have come before me, and for whom the award is named, I am forever grateful."

Very Well Deserved!

We all appreciate your support!

About John Macomber

John was a rugger at the University of Georgia and played for Old White RFC.

Tragically, John was shot and killed while working as the bar tender at the 5 Paces in Atlanta on July 31, 1987. John was 36 when he was taken from us. The Atlanta Police Department still considers his murder an open homicide case.

RIP Johnny Mac!
