Introduction The UGA Rugby Club exists to provide students with an opportunity to learn an exciting, physical, fast-paced, and different game. We encourage anyone with an athletic background to give rugby a try. EXPERIENCE IS NOT NECESSARY. Come on out and learn the game- we'll teach you. Current members have backgrounds ranging from tennis to basketball to football. SIZE IS NOT A PREREQUISITE! We have players from 5'6", 140lbs. to 6'2",280lbs. The only thing you need is a desire to practice hard and learn the game. Some of our best ruggers are the smaller guys. If you decide not to play, at least come out and support the Bulldog Rugby team. Your support means a lot to us. About our team The UGA Men's Rugby Team is a collegiate Division I club team, which means all of our players must be UGA students and enrolled in college no earlier than Fall of 01'. If you would like to play and you dont meet these requirements please come out and practice anyway. Although most of our matches are against collegiate clubs, we still play against some men's clubs. Some colleges we compete against are Georgia Tech, Clemson, Furman, Georgia Southern, Life College, Auburn, and the Citadel. Mens' clubs we play against include the Atlanta Renegades, the Birmingham Vulcans (ALA), Old White (Atlanta), the Montgomery Yellowhammers, and teams from Knoxville, Tennessee and Greenville, South Carolina. We play YEAR-ROUND, so feel free to come by and watch a practice or one of our games, or to call one of our officers with any questions at any time. We are always accepting new players. History The University of Georgia Rugby Football Club was founded in 1967, and is the oldest club sport on campus. The club is sanctioned through the Recreational Sports Office of the University. We are a member of the Georgia Rugby Union, USA Rugby East, and the United States Rugby Union. There are 22 clubs in Georgia, and over 1000 in the country. Since the club's inception, we have been one of the most successful teams in the Southeast. Social Life In addition to high-quality athletics, members of the UGARFC are able to experience a social atmosphere that is unique to rugby players around the world. It is custom for the home team to host a party after every match, where both teams get together and socialize, putting all game-time differences aside. The social aspect of the game is just as important as the athletics, and it is something that can't be described- only experienced. |
