UGA 24 Georgia Tech 7

Sandy Creek Park
Athens, GA

Saturday January 19, 2008
Referee: Sherman

It was cold and wet, which forced us to move our game from our regular field to Sandy Creek Park at the last minute. We whipped up a pretty damn good field on 30 minutes notice, although it did lack some of the frills (like goal posts).

We played a smart, controlled game and had most of the possession in the first half, putting in a try in the 20th minute for a 5-0 lead. Tech game right back with a quick tap try for a 7-5 lead, but we answered 5 minutes later with a James Roberson try in the corner, converted by Ryan Cooke, to go up 12-7 at half.

Tech had the ball for most of the first 15 minutes of the second half but couldn't score, we then went up 17-7 on a Jared Swanson pick and go try. Will Pinkston finished things off in the 70th minute to make the final 24-7.

(Oh, and if you're wondering how we had conversions with no goal posts, we had the touch judges stand there about 6 yards apart with their arms up... they did a heck of a job, didn't even flinch when the ball was coming at their head)

Man of the match, in his first A-side game, goes to Will Pinkson for breaking the gain line over and over (and over) on a cold, nasty day when handling was not easy.

UGA 15 Georgia Tech 5

We played 3 periods and took a 5-0 lead in the first when Tony Niknejad scored in the corner in the first period. Tech came back to make it 5-5. It stayed that way into the 3rd period when Chris Etchells scored an unconverted try. Nick Burgess finished things off at the death with a try just inside the corner flag for the 15-5 final.

We had several players really make an impact including Evan Jones and Justin Smith, but the UGA man of the match was Will Sayers who was supposed to play Outside Center but ended up playing scrum half and flyhalf and controlling the game, both offensively and defensively.
