UGA 39 Georgia Tech 19
Burger Bowl, Atlanta, Georgia
Saturday November 3, 2007
Referee: Derrick Sturisky
This was LAU All Star weekend, so the players from each team on the Georgia all star team weren't here, which gave the game a different feel to the one played a couple weeks ago that Tech won handily. Our goal was to win our set pieces and, after a poor start where Tech wheeled the scrums, we got a handle on it and ended up controlling the scrums in the second half. This game was also a chance to see how our lineout would do without Michael Thompson, and it did well enough. We had good ball for most of the game.
(All these notes are from memory as I didn't have my beloved clipboard with me and I don't feel like watching game film just to find details for you... tragic, I know)
We had the worst start to this game of any game I've ever seen. We received the kickoff, ran sideways, lost the ball in the ruck, then missed 3 tackles (on soft attempts) as tech took the ball in for a try. Couldn't have been 30 seconds into the game. We responded well enough, controlling possession and pressuring tech until Michael Leitmann scored a try which TJ McGaha converted. But Tech scored again almost immediately, with our team again missing several tackles.
At that point we were losing scrums, losing rucks, being out physical-ed in all contact situations. We looked down. But our guys got themselves together and started playing simple, clean rugby, knowing we had an advantage in the backline. We scored a second converted try (Sam Pennel, I think). Tech then scored a very nice solo try on a chip ahead, but that was the end of their scoring on the day.
We had the ball for almost the entire second half, pulling away to win 39-19 (yes, my memories get more and more vague as we did things more and more right... it's those glaring mistakes that always get remembered).
Man of the first half was Harrison DeJarnett.
Man of the match was Nick Burgess, who made good decisions and provided good
leadership throughout the game.

About half of our side had just played the first game and our backline consisted of 4 forwards who had never played in the backs before. We started well, taking a 3-0 lead on a Ryan Downey penalty kick. Tech then had the run of play for most of the half. We scored a first half try, although I can't remember what it was... might have been Tyler Leonard scoring through the centers. See, kids, ALWAYS know where your clipboard is. I believe halftime score was 13-8.
The second half went back and forth before we controlled the last 10 minutes but were unable to pull the game out. We had several overloads but failed to run them properly and took the ball into contact each time, losing the scoring opportunity each time.
I don't doubt there are a billion errors, feel free to let me know.
