UGA 29 Western Carolina 7

Western Carolina came out strong, as always. A very physical, hard running team, they scored a converted try in the 6th minute to take a 7-0 lead. UGA recovered and generally had the run of play for the rest of the first half but couldn't put any points on the board until the 32nd minute when Sean Catlett scored to make it 7-5. Five minutes later he scored again, this time off an errant lineout throw over the back of the WCU lineout, Sean picked it up and touched it down for a 12-7 lead. Just before half UGA scored again, this time Ryan Cook juked his way through the heart of the WCU defense to touch down for a 19-7 lead at the half.

The second half started with more of the same as Sean Catlett took a slow switch and broke several tackles to score an unconverted try in the 42nd minute. Then things quieted down and nobody scored until UGA finished if off when Sean Catlett forced a turnover and went 20 meters for the try. Final score was 29-7.

We (those of you who have been reading the intermittent match reports over the years will note that the only constant is the alternation between "UGA" and "We") did a lot of things better than last week but too often tried to force the issue with passes out of contact when a quick ruck would have been the better option. Our scrums were excellent, especially considering we played most of the match missing 4 of the tight 5 who started last weeks game (due to injuries).

Next week brings another challenge as we travel to Atlanta to play Georgia Tech and South Carolina.

UGA 21 Emory 17

Athens, Georgia
Saturday September 16, 2006, 12:00 pm
Referee: Ed Ward

Emory made their first trip to Athens in many years to face UGA's B-side. UGA came out very organized and successfully ran through multiple phases several times. Sustained pressure lead to penalties by Nico Vaio in the 7th, 16th, and 28th minutes to push out to a 9-0 halftime lead.

Emory came out strong in the second half scoring a 50 meter try through the centers in the 43rd minute to close the gap to 9-7. UGA didn't panic, however, and Ryan Downey scored a try in the 50th minute to make it 14-7. In the 58th minute James broke a 30 meter run, Tony in support kicked the ball forward several times before Cutler Bleeker touched it down to make it 21-7. From there on out it was all Emory, though. They scored a try from a quick tapped penalty in the 70th minute and another in the 78th minute, but were unable to convert either and lost by those 4 points, 21-17.

All in all we're very pleased with our performance. Emory played a solid game and closed very strong. UGA did a dramatically better job playing smart, organized rugby than last week and the difference showed.

UGA 29 Emory / WCU 0

Athens, Georgia
Saturday September 16, 2006, 4:00 pm
Referee: Alex Rocca

The third game was a mixture of rookies and some alumni against an Emory / WCU motley side. Several of our rookies had very strong games, including Chris "Stickman" Okotcha who had 3 runs of 30 meters or more and Ellis Dontkonwlastname who had two tries in his grasp only to see them slip away. UGA controlled the run of play for most of the game, with Marc Thomas scoring a try in the 10th minute, Dustin Karr in the 14th, and Marc Petrini in the 20th for a 19-0 halftime lead.

In the second half Chris Okotcha scored on a break by Pierre Charvet to go up 24-0. Neil Beers closed the scoring with a pick and go from a break by Dustin Karr. Final score was 29-0.
