UGA 22 Florida State 3

Florida State brought a big, fast team and the first game of the year was an intense one. UGA scored first in the 5th minute on a penalty kick by Sean Catlett from about 25 meters. In the 11th minute Florida State tied it on a penalty kick of their own. Things were very even from then until the end of the half with nobody able to score. UGA had an apparent try called back after a chip kick was touched down by Tony Niknejad in the corner as he'd put a foot into touch. Just before half Sean Catlett scored from a 5 meter scrum to make it 8-3, then on the last play of the half he broke a 40 meter run for a try and then converted it himself to make the halftime score 15-3.

In the 51st minute a Florida State player was yellow carded for stomping. Five minutes later UGA capitalized by taking a lineout at the 22 and driving a maul 10 meters before Harrison DeJarnett took it the rest of the way, breaking a couple tackles for the try. Sean Catlett converted to make it 22-3. Florida State came back down and had an apparent try called back when it was held up in the try zone.

All in all an excellent showing by UGA. The pack was solid and we tackled well. FSU was a physical team and I thought this was the best game we have played in a long time.

Kennesaw St 24 UGA 3

Kennesaw State always has a physical team and this year was no different. Things were sloppy all game for us as we failed to have any continuity of posession and fitness became an issue early. We got solid first phase ball but were generally unable to do much useful with it. We did score first, with a penalty in the 16th minute by Nico to make it 3-0. We had some other chances including a couple of attacking lineouts inside their 22, but were unable to score. Kennesaw St took the lead in the 34th minute when they stole our scrum and their #8 took it in for the try, which they converted. They scored again just before half time as they put one in after sustained pressure. Halftime score was 12-3.

We did a little bit better in the second half as far as playing to pattern, but weren't able to score. In the 60th minute Kennesaw St had a 70 meter break, were brought down just short of the goal line and then we forced a turnover. But in the 65th minute their #8 scored another try on a pickup off a scrum. They closed the scoring in the 80th minute with an overload through the backs for a 24-3 final.

We had several players play extremely well, including Craig Holland, Cutler Bleeker, and Jordan Posey, but never put it together as a team and have a lot to work on for next week.

Florida State combined with some UGA alumni and a couple current UGA players in our third game of the day. I don't know the final score, but the FSU side won by several tries. A couple of our new players scored, with Chris "Stickman" Okotcha scoring for UGA and David Meek and Clayton McGill scoring for FSU. Play was scrappy but there were big runs by both sides and some encouraging play by our rookies.
