UGA 27 Georgia Tech 15
Grant Park, Atlanta, GA

Referee: Alex Rocca
We
played this game at Grant Park, which worked out pretty well because it meant
we didn't have to play in Tech's Burger Bowl. It was a chilly day and the
field was a bit muddy but not too bad. Tech took an early 3-0 lead on a 20
meter penalty kick but UGA responded with a try at 17 minutes when Daniel
Van Dijk picked up from a ruck a couple of meters out and went through and
touched it down. Blake Richter converted for a 7-3 lead.We (the author reserves
the right to flip back and forth from "Us/We" and "UGA"
as he sees fit) had some good continuity and posession along with several
good breaks but kept giving them away with penalties.
Ten minutes after the first try Trevor Maliro chipped over tech's line from 25 meters out and Julian Harris pulled it down in the try zone for the score to make it 12-3. A few minutes before the half after some sustained pressure Josh Feller picked up from a ruck and dove over for the try to make is 17-3.
Early
in the second half tech's inside center was sent to the sin bin for a high
tackle after Tech had been warned in the first half. UGA responded a few minutes
later with more pressure and a try off of a ruck at 5 meters by Josh Tedder
to make it 22-3. Five minutes later Tech kicked a ball deep which was bobbled
by our wing, Tech came down on it, picked it up, and scored an easy try to
make it 22-8. At the 30 minute mark Julian Harris had an impressive 40 meter
try, weaving through several tech defenders to make it 27-8. Just before the
end of the game UGA was countering a kick close to its own line and threw
a poorly advised pass which was picked off and taken in for a try to close
the scoring at 27-15.
All in all we had some promising play and did a lot of things well, but mistakes typical of the first game of the season hurt us and kept the score closer than we would have liked. We had some loose ball handling all around and gave away some easy points which could have been avoided.

Second Game
UGA 57 Georgia Tech 0
Referee: Doug "Garbageman" Porter
The
second game was a bit of a mismatch from the start as UGA had several veterans
playing along with the rookies against a young Tech team. UGA broke many long
runs as Tech had trouble tackling. Tech did have some good phases of play
but had trouble sustaining anything because of a lack of support and some
weak rucking. Note the sharp looking ref in the picture.
